Where SLS Goes…The Rest Follow!!

November 19, 2014

The former Sahara hotel located at the North end of the Las Vegas strip, has under gone a major refurbishment, turning it into what has now become the hippest and trendiest place to see and be seen…The glamorous and palatial SLS Las Vegas.  The hotel features 1,613 guestrooms in three distinct towers namely Story, World and Lux.  The rooms range from luxurious 325-square-foot well designed and thoughtfully arranged spaces to extravagant and opulent penthouse suites spanning 3,300 square feet oozing contemporary sophistication, all beautifully designed by renowned interior designer Phillip Starck.

I stayed at the SLS Vegas on my last trip to Las Vegas and on arrival I noticed that unlike other hotel and casino resorts in Las Vegas, the SLS lobby was not swamped with busy gamblers and slot machines, something not easily come by in Vegas, after all the SLS Vegas is a hotel and casino resort!   What makes the SLS different is that there are two main entrances to the hotel, one that leads you straight on to the casino floor and another mainly dedicated to guests of the hotel who can go through check-in avoiding  any hassle.

During my stay I was put up in a capacious and bright room with a simple monochrome palette and contemporary furnishings.  A crisp white chaise lounge made a stunning feature by the window, a supersoft kingsize bed, perfect to assist in easing my jetlag, also thoughtfully provided was a stash of Saints or Sinners treats in the mini bar to help me settle in.  The rooms and suites all designed by Philippe Starck in collaboration with Gensler are unique and vibrant, sophisticated and sleek, but in true Vegas style a rock God had been chosen to put his mark on a few Executive Suites at the SLS, I can now reveal they were designed by Kravitz Design Inc…Yes Lenny Kravitz himself!

The hotel also houses some of the finest restaurants in Las Vegas, such as Bazaar Meat by Jose Andres, which for anyone who loves their meat is the perfect place to be and while you are there I recommend the clams, the classic tartar and the bone-in strip loin.  The Bazaar Meat by Jose is fine dining at its absolute best.  The Katsuya by Starck is a collaboration between Master Sushi Chef Katsuya Uechi and interior designer Philippe, they have created delicious cocktails and spectacular sushi and sashimi platters that simply blow your mind.  Truly a venue not to be missed!

For breakfast, if you are lucky enough to get a table (as it is always full) the only place is the Griddle café, it serves a mouthwatering breakfast of gigantic proportions, enough to feed an army of Arabian Princes.   The Umami Burger, Beer Garden & Sports bar provides the outdoor entertaining space that is necessary for every hotel, guests here can watch sports, enjoy a beer or a rare whiskey and pick on delicious finger food including juicy burgers and crispy fries.  These were my favorites, however there is whole other list of restaurants in the hotel such as Cleo, superb for Mediterranean cuisine, Ku Noodle for the Asian choice, 800 Degrees Neapolitan Pizzeria for those that fancy a bit of Italian and the all you can eat SLS buffet if you fancy going into a culinary coma!

As I was in Vegas for a short stay with a lot of events packed into a mere three days, I decided it would be wise to take time out to relax at the Ciel Spa a full-service facility, where a much needed Energy Lift Ritual treatment was administered to my overly battered person.   The hotel also has a fitness centre, but as my time was limited I didn’t manage a  visit, however to my colleagues that did and were full of praise for the knowledgable staff and great equipment.

It is safe to say that you can stay at the SLS Vegas and feel absolutely no need to venture from the premises for anything whatsoever,  everything you need is right there on your door step.  The nightlife and entertainment at the SLS is amazing too, the LiFE club which is housed within 20,000-square-feet, under sixty foot ceilings featuring provocative performances, art and captivating LED installments, 70 VIP tables and three bars.  The Sayers club, which has an edgier feel of a jazz lounge with a stage for various performances, but comes alive when the djs play some of the best R ‘n’ B, hip hop and pop tunes to a very sophisticated and beautiful crowd.   There is also the Foxtail, the Monkey Bar for fabulous cocktails and the Centre Bar situated right in the centre of the casino floor.

I believe that this is the revival of the once glorious North End of  Las Vegas.  I spotted new mega developments happening in the area confirming that this is the new plush and lavish area of the city.

Where SLS goes, the rest follow.
